Open access: green way
This method of publishing is also called self-archiving. The essence of it is that a non-final version (pre-print, post-print) of an article published in a subscription journals can be placed by the author on his/her website or in an institutional repository, from which anyone can access it after a certain embargo period (e.g., 0-24 months).
The publication repository of ELTE is EDIT.
Open access: gold way
Articles published in this way are immediately, permanently, and completely open and accessible to anyone, in addition, publisher versions can be downloaded, archived, and shared. In this case, publishers usually charge a publication fee or an Article Processing Charge (APC) fee, which must be reimbursed by either the author or a sponsor.
Journals are called subscription journals that can be read in both print and online with a subscription fee.
Journals are called hybrid journals that basically follow a subscription model, but also offer the opportunity for the author to make his/her article openly available on the publisher’s online interface. If you choose open access, the article can be read for free from the moment of publication and can be used in the manner specified in the license. The publisher may charge and appearance fee (APC) for this.
Gold open access journal
The journals in which all articles are published in gold open access are called Gold Open Access or fully Open Access journals. The article is free to read from the moment it is published and should be used in the manner specified in the license. The publisher may charge a fee (APC) for the publication of the article.
Journals are called diamond/platinum journals that are gold Open Access or fully Open Access journals and do not charge authors a publication fee. Authors can publish for free in these journals. Using DOAJ search engine, one can look for a sutable diamond journal for publication among over 11,000 diamond journals. Filtering options are available by research field or publisher. One can also find suitable diamond journals on ELTE’s OJS platform.
Open Access publishers
These are publishers where every journal or book is published in an Open Access way. E.g., MDPI, Plos.
Cost of Publishing, Article Processing Charge (APC)
There are constant costs of publishing scientific articles: these can include the cost of revising, making texts up, online appearance etc. These costs are funded by subscribers following the subscription model. In the case of Open Access articles, these costs must be paid by the authors or by a sponsor instead of the authors. This is the so-called Article Processing Charge (APC).
These are journals that publishers launch with the same title as their existing hybrid journals with gold Open Access availability. There is an X in these titles which indicates that it is not the same journal. The editorial and revising policies are theoretically the same for the two journals.
Mirror journals receive a new ISSN, they appear as a new journal, i.e. they are not automatically included in the same rankings and databases (e.g., SCImago Journal and Country Rank), in which the original journal is already listed.
There are Open Access publishers that search for or request publication of authors unsolicited. Primarily, they work for financial gain, however, they lack real professionalism and scholarship; these are called predator publishers.
They publish their publications as scientific publications, however, the articles and studies received by them are not selected or professionally evaluated. If you suspect that you are dealing with a predator publisher, you should choose another publisher.
Read and Publish
The essence of Read and Publish, also known as temporary agreements, is that subscription fees and the fees of Open Access publications (APC) are managed within one contract. In the case of the Read and Publish agreements concluded by the Electronic Information Service National Programme (EISZ), the subscription fee includes a certain number of Open Access publications for the entire Hungarian consortium specified in the contract. The correspondence authors of the institutions subscribing to the given database can publish their articles in the order of appearance with open access and without further financial outlay referring to them. These authors may resort to the possibilities until the exhaustion of the quota.
Further information about the databases subscribe at ELTE, which also includes an Open Access publication, can be found on the website of EKL .
