Semmelweis (film by Lajos Koltai, 2023)

The ELTE–NFI University Film Club continues the series of screenings and discussions. We welcome university citizens from all faculties of ELTE.

Today, we remember Ignác Semmelweis as a legend, a man of courage and steadfastness, a man of both knowledge and justice. He is not known as the saviour of mothers for nothing. But in his own time he was seen in a very different light. The other Hungarian doctors he worked with in the obstetrics clinic in Vienna thought he was mad: he was not interested in the pleasures of the imperial city, he was just doing his job. The Austrian doctors thought him unbearably violent: he had only one goal in mind, the health of the mothers entrusted to him; and for the sake of this sacred cause he broke every rule and every barrier.

And for his boss, the head of the clinic, he was the living, unpleasant conscience: for if Doctor Semmelweis's theory was true, and the obstetricians were spreading the disease that had killed so many women, they were all murderers.

He had a midwife working alongside him, who saw in him what no one else did: a man who wanted love and reassurance. The film focuses on the year 1847, when a mysterious epidemic decimates the women giving birth in a clinic in Vienna. Doctor Ignác Semmelweis, defying all conventional theories, tries to conquer puerperal fever.

Larry (film by Szilárd Bernáth, 2022)

The ELTE–NFI University Film Club continues the series of screenings and discussions. We welcome university citizens from all faculties of ELTE to the University Library and Archives.

Szilárd Bernáth's powerful directorial debut is a socially sensitive film that appeals to young people, with a shockingly authentic performance by Benett Vilmányi and Szabolcs Thuróczy.

21-year-old Ádám is a loner, a boy from Borsod, working as a shepherd, who is ashamed of his stutter. He lives in a tense, yet intimate coldness with his once violent, now tamed father, who has found refuge in religion. Adam is unable to find his place until he realises that he can express himself without stuttering through rap music, under the stage name Larry, and face his frustrations of helplessness. His rage-fuelled lyrics get the attention of local youths, and he gains an unexpected level of popularity online. A national talent show could be her breakthrough, but when she comes face to face with people, her speech falters again. He cannot perform live until he overcomes his inner limitations and takes control of his own life.

Cast: Szabolcs Thuróczy, Benett Vilmányi, Anna Szandtner, Levente Orbán, László Onofer, Álmos Előd, Gellért Csiki, Alexandra Borbély, Éva Bandor.

Date: 2 April 2025, 18.00

Venue: ELTE University Library and Archives (1053 Budapest, Ferenciek tere 6, community space from the lobby, ground floor)

In the post-screening discussion, our guests are: screenwriter and director Szilárd Bernáth, producer Veronika Gaszner. Róza Emilia Barna and Ágnes Patakfalvi-Czirják, lecturers at the Department of Sociology and Communication, Budapest University of Technology and Economics.
