Knowledge Preserved Within Walls – One and a Half Centuries of the University Library Building

In celebration of the 150th anniversary of Library Palace’s opening, an exhibition is launching at the ELTE University Library and Archives.

Through the documents on display as part of Cultural Heritage Days, visitors gain insight into the adventurous past of the Library Palace, the plans and sketches of the Franciscan monastery – which housed the collection for nearly a century – and the subsequent building, the history of the unique artifacts and furnishings, the bomb shelter planned for the basement, the reading rooms of yesteryear, and the inner courtyard, which was once adorned with a flower garden and a pond.

Date: 19 September 2026, 11:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m.

Venue: ELTE University Library and Archives, Historic Storage Room on the 2nd floor

Everyone is welcome to join us on this journey through history!

As part of the exhibition, visitors are invited to view the Classicist-style cabinet from the 1780s–1790s, which was restored with support from the National Cultural Fund, on display in the Director-General’s Office.
