The ELTE–NFI University Film Club screening and discussion series continues. We welcome university members from all ELTE faculties.
Angi Vera is a young nursing assistant at a hospital. When she speaks out against the deplorable conditions, she is reprimanded, but the Communist Party takes her under its wing nonetheless. She is sent for ideological training, where she learns to be an agitator in exchange for room and board. Meanwhile, she falls in love with one of her teachers, but she is unable to live out her love within the strict confines of the school. The film is about how communism shattered people’s personalities. After all, the party school is like a prison: anyone who runs away is dragged back by soldiers; dancing and having fun are only allowed on command. Angi Vera is placed alongside the cold, hard-line Anna Traján, from whom years spent in hiding and fleeing the Arrow Cross have stripped away all humanity. By the end of the film, the dictatorship reveals its true face, willing to sacrifice everything for its goals.
